theres a scene in the opening sequence where the kids in school learn of a female suicide. the kids are incredulous about her death, pointing to the fact that she was beautiful and that she shouldnt have committed suicide. its one of malick s most viscerally compassionate scenes (dont get the feelings). its nice to see the director using his resources (a huge cast, hot lighting, long takes) to underscore the poignancy of a scene like that, using his usually invisible but economical methods to open up his characters to the subject of suicide, which is also what this movie is (so theres that in mind).
its also one of the most transformative moments of the whole film. baca (who obviously died young) is by far the most decent of the two brothers, a fact that he conveys with a shy stutter that makes his shyness forlorn. the music that accompanies him is the romance of the song he sings just before he dies. its an incredibly bittersweet song, and it s instantly stirring, especially when its shared in the girls bathroom. its after that little musical duet, that maras throws a grenade into the girls bathroom. theres only one shot in the whole film, and its the final shot. its just maras slinging the grenade, just him and the camera. its the last thing we see; youre in the bathroom with maras, malick is quiet, and then you see that flashing grenade and youre in the girls bathroom with maras again. its a stunning visual that also serves as a visual object lesson: in the world, people kill. its what happens, and you dont talk about it, you act about it. its a master class in non-violence. in fact, it s the only malickian movie i m ever going to need.
