On Thursday, during a visit to Seoul, President Donald Trump introduced his own highly ambitious plan to return the US to global leadership in the area—with the goal of making the country a world leader in production of robots for use in war.

“We’re gonna do a lot of work on that,” Trump said, referring to robotics. “It’s one of the many things we’re doing.”

The remarks, which were made in a meeting with South Korean President Moon Jae-in, who is keen to become a regional leader in AI and robotics, belie concerns about what the US president thinks about the way Washington has placed itself in the global economic order.

“It was not an announcement that fundamentally challenged the global order in any way,” said Tai Ming Cheung, an expert at the Centre for Global Governance at the Australian National University and an author of a 2015 study that found China as a whole was no more likely than other countries to dominate the nation-state system.

“President Trump’s rhetoric and rhetoric in the past doesn’t really suggest that he is about to change the global order,” he continued.

Even if the US ends up being the major player in robotics and AI, the country will hardly be alone in the field. Large parts of the developing world, including India and Brazil, are also working to develop these technologies.

“Robotics is very big in China and India,” said Marvin Heyn, professor of computer science at the University of California Berkeley. “China has a long history of wanting to be the region that is the world leader in robotics.”
