The circadian rhythms of serum melatonin, cortisol, and blood glucose were examined in the diabetic and nondiabetic subjects in the morning and evening of the control day and under conditions of nocturnal caloric deprivation in the patient group. Blood samples were obtained every 4 h during the 24-h period, and the data were statistically analyzed by cosinor (a computer-based analysis program). The daytime circadian rhythms of melatonin, cortisol, and blood glucose in diabetic subjects were found to be similar to those of the nondiabetic individuals. Nocturnal sleep deprivation resulted in a shortening of the duration of nighttime melatonin secretion, a reduction in melatonin levels, and a decline in the acrophase of melatonin, cortisol, and blood glucose in the diabetic individuals.
