DAMASCUS, Syria, Jan. 30 (UPI) — Aid workers in Syria say they are beginning to wonder how much of the violence there was a deliberate, orchestrated campaign of terror by Bashar Assad’s government.
From the beginning of the civil war, rebels and Syrian government forces have used rockets, mortars and conventional weapons, including artillery and barrel bombs filled with explosives and shrapnel, in a relentless effort to rid the country of its other, Alawite-led government.
More than 180,000 Syrians have been killed, injured or made refugees since the war began in 2011, when anti-government protests erupted across the country.
The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said Friday explosions in the city of al-Raqqa killed 27 people, including 16 civilians, while the war monitor said bombs had struck several locations in Damascus.
The Observatory said government forces fired eight barrel bombs, containing large amounts of explosives and shrapnel, in Damascus on Friday.
It said four of the barrel bombs fell in the areas of Mashhad Daryan and Makhoul, where there are Shiite mosques, while the other four fell near a religious school in the al-Rashidiyeh area.
It said a fifth barrel bomb failed to detonate when it hit a residential building in the Mezzeh area in central Damascus, while the sixth failed to explode when it struck a building near a mosque in the al-Sha’aa area in the western part of the capital.
The British-based Observatory, which relies on a network of sources inside Syria, said an unexploded artillery shell landed on a residential street in al-Wisqa, south of Damascus, on Friday.
It said seven people were wounded when the shell landed near a popular snack shop and popular outdoor restaurant.
The Syrian conflict began as a popular uprising against the Assad family’s 41-year rule but quickly turned into a civil war that has resulted in an estimated 240,000 deaths and millions of refugees.
The government is backed by Iran and Russia, while rebel forces are backed by the United States and several Arab states.
