Thank you for the question. A crack is nothing more than a scratch in the paint film. Cracks are usually the result of excess solids in a paint, or a paint that is not properly prepared before application. The straight, even type of crack is created during the drying process. This is not a defect to the painter, and can be controlled with drying tools such as gauges and heat. If the crack patterns look more like cracks that appear to be a defect, such as cackles and fissures, then it might be because the paint was not properly prepared before painting. If this is the case, then there are things you can do prior to painting. When I am consulting with a new client, I make sure that they have done an adequate surface prep using their own surface preparation tools. This step is vital to getting the best color, and to developing a stable film that will not crack or crackle after application.
You can also try mixing more water into the paint, which will cause your paint to dry harder, and may give you a much more stable paint film. If you are still having paint film problems after making these adjustments, then you might also consider letting the painting dry and applying a top coat. A top coat can be any material such as a varnish, acrylic, Gesso, or Gesso acrylic. It will usually affect the paint more than the crack, and will possibly “hide” the crack.
Some crackle solutions are designed to be over the line into a crackle film. This film remains stable and crack-resistant if you wish to apply the crackle after the painting is dry. The result is a crackle that is integrated, and will not crack as the painting is being worked on. Again, this is dependent on the system being under-bound just enough to develop the crackle, but yet stable enough to survive the work being done on the painting. This approach is often most effective when working on a new piece, where you do not yet have a stable crackle film. The more you work on a piece, the more the crackle may fall apart and lose that integrated effect. This is where heat tools come in handy, as you can carefully set the crackle to heat-sensitive stone to help stabilize it.
