no other rap album has even come close to matching their run at the top of the r&b chart, and they’re still among the top five albums in that chart today. according to billboard, the album was the first hip hop album in 12 years to exceed 1,000,000 in sales.

atliens, released on september 23, 1996, went on to be the group’s biggest selling album to date. it also spawned their first number one hit single, “player’s ball,” and went platinum twice in 1997 (once in the u.s. and once in the u.k. — the first rap album to do so). there have been other massive selling rap albums, but none have been as consistent, as consistently popular, or as well charted as atliens.

at the time, outkast were one of the only southern hip-hop groups getting love in the usually north of the border dominated hip-hop world. while they arent alone in this, certainly, they were one of the few. but when you go beyond the slick commercialism of the mainstream, when you look beyond the monetary success and focus on the artistic merit, you get the full picture, dre and big boi had just made a true classic with south central outkast. looking back on it, one must ask, what were the musical and lyrical pillars that made stankonia such a classic? if you answered the grooves, then youre right. stankonia is a classic record because of its solid bass, crackly, crisp turntable sampling and expansive composition. its also a classic because its bursting with outkast-ian genius, inspired rhymes and a booty like no other.

but the album also has a soul to it. where other records were trying to be transcendent, in some ways trying to transcend rap, outkast never tried to make itself bigger than rap. the lyrics are what matter, and even if youre not a fan of their jokes, you can appreciate stankonias earnestness in the context of hip-hop. if you enjoyed bridges to babylon, youll enjoy dre day as well. for all its glory, dre day is a reminder of the fact that outkast had started out on the wrong foot. after bridges, theyd gone from being an up-and-comer to a little angry white guys. were no longer cool. and yet, neither are any of the other superstars that came after them.

their legacy goes back to the ’90s, but theyve lived on through the new rap generations. outkast havent had the chance to reach their full potential because they had an artistic and musical golden age in the late 90s and early 2000s. and if youre lucky enough to see outkast live these days, youll know why. theyre still as charismatic, as funny, as goofy and as ridiculous as ever. and thats enough. we are proud to celebrate the songs and the artistic and lyrical paradigm they represent, and hope youre as proud to be a fan of outkast as we are.
