the trainer was great! easy to set up and excellent quality. i used it in combination with the felt w3 wheel. it was rather noisy and hard to hear. it is very stylish looking. overall, it is a good priced, high quality trainer.
as for the trainer, it was easy to hook up & run, and seemed to connect just fine even under wifi or 3g. it reads the power sensors from the cranks (just like an external power meter) which is cool. for sensors to do this they also need to be powered, and they are. i assume theres more than enough power to run something like zwift, or trainerroad, but then again its probably not wanted. i havent used it enough to know if you have to be paying attention to maintain the connection.
the only thing i liked about the zwift app, for comparison, was that it seemed more reliable in detecting the bike. i cant say there was a massive difference though, and it did lock up once and have to reboot. but for the other apps, if they get into a specific app not open when its locked up (usually results in all apps crashing), they dont need to reboot to continue.
i did check that the shift sensor was working. its supposed to send the power when the trainer is in 1st gear, when you jump into 2nd gear theres a 5 second delay while the shift sensor posts data to the trainer, and then you get power data for the small shift in 1st gear. i couldnt seem to find any way to post the data to the trainer.
then theres the other issue of having the power sensors on the cranks. while they are relatively cheap (the whole setup is about $200 in the us) theres a reason that the bike makers just use the flywheel/inner chain drive. it is more reliable than using a crank and power sensors.
i’ve had two crashes. one rider fell, the wheels spun and kicked it in to my helmet, the other was a crash after i had too hard of a pedal stroke on a steep ramp to get up. though, i would say that was due to me struggling to brake in time or controlling the bike after the crash. regardless, i probably could have ridden to a safer place if i crashed (but maybe not, and that’s just human nature).
the final crash was from a swerve to avoid another rider. i remember thinking, oh man i’m going to wreck. but thankfully, i didnt and was back on my bike just fine, yet losing a bit of time. the rider hit me from the outside and caused me to start rolling. the cranks werent moving but the bike was. then i crashed.
the only reason theres a review of this bike is because if the questions i have are answered, then this bike would actually make a nice trainer. in addition to on-bike power, an option to shift and power off the flywheel would be neat. then it could keep the sensors off the crankarms so they didnt need to be cr2032 powered and so theyd work outside, too.
as you may have seen from the various demo videos ive been using, ive been using the rift lately as a way to show off the next generation of technology. there was just something interesting about the experience, and it enabled me to work through some very interesting issues in the development of the bike which are shown below.
you may remember in the demo video i showed the dash, and how difficult it was to turn the bike because you were looking behind you. this is really only the tip of the iceberg, and not some huge concept. its basically a way to give the user the ability to see all four in your peripheral view. not just the normal cockpit. basically they have full control of the world around you, instead of a small world of just the bike on your shoulders.
