as long as the flute is used regularly it will probably last your student a good few years. the key on flutes are basically a direct copy of the key or schallplattens on the piano. when pressing the key you have to press the key a certain distance from the bottom of the barrel so that the key will fall into the hole. there are two holes for the key and you have to aim it carefully to get it right. on cheap flutes the key ring is loose and tends to move about. if you flute is one of these cheap ones then it should be replaced immediately. flutes are made out of materials that will become weakened with time. flutes are mainly made out of nickel with silver plating so you wouldnt want to have to change the metal rings at any stage. the cheapest flutes are plastic but they are always fine or long lasting.
the serial number will be on the back of the flute and should be last number of the serial number. the serial number is easy to find on a flute. it’s the last number under the letter ‘g’ followed by a ‘1’. the only problem is that the serial numbers are usually stamped onto the back of the flute. the stamping process is done when the flute is made meaning that the serial number changes so quickly if you have a bad serial number on your flute.
the flute could be either student or intermediate model. the beginner models are cheap, a bit faulty & are prone to serious choking problems. the intermediate ones are better made, but the price is more expensive. the price can vary from around $40- $80 depending on the maker and its quality. i got mine for $60 back in the 90’s. as long as you use it regularly, it’ll last your student a long time.
i believe the emersons did not put the keys on the flute neck when they were first making the flutes, but ryno did. that is why they are called “emerson by ryno” because of the ryno keys. it is sort of like ordering a hamburger at mcdonalds and the employee puts it on the hamburger plate. then you order and they ask what kind of burger it is, and then “thank you, sir” they hand you your order. they could have chosen any manufacturer and put them on.
thanks so much for the input, i’m very excited to see this flute. i’m not sure how i’ll go about buying it, i’m in canada but the flutes i’ve found have an f, bb, c or c,e key system and i’m pretty sure the key mechanism is such that no matter what key you hit, the flute will be on.
looking at some of the comments i posted above, the issue may have to do with the thickness and weight of the flute. my flute, which is a student, is very light and my instructor said it felt strange to play. if that is the case, a beginner flute may be the way to go. a student model is designed to be light and simple for a beginning player. on the other hand, an intermediate/open model might be a little unwieldy. it is also the thickness of the flute that determines how loud it can be. ideally, the intonation on a flute should not vary, so you should look at the features available on the student model. some flutes have better intonation than others, particularly on high notes. if you are unsure, ask your flute teacher.
there are a few factors to consider when buying a flute. first and foremost is the quality of the wood in the body and the head joint. wood is often the most expensive part of the flute and can make or break a flute, depending on the wood selected. woods that are more expensive are usually lighter, more resistant to moisture, and have better tone. materials like metal and plastic may be cheaper, but the sound will not be as mellow and the tone is not as rich. in terms of durability, many of the materials used are more durable than wood. metal, for example, is harder to crack and will resist moisture better. eventually, a student flute will wear out over time; you should choose a student flute that will be durable. the reed system is also important to consider. some flutes come with reeds that are appropriate for beginners, while others are designed for more advanced players. you may want to add reeds to a student flute, but if you are learning an entire instrument, you’ll need to make sure you have a sufficient quantity of reeds available. finally, flutes are usually priced based on the size of the instrument, and there are flutes that cost more or less depending on the size of the flute. a student model is usually the best option if price is no factor.
