in 1999, a novel coronavirus, identified as oc43, caused a severe respiratory illness in the majority of children and adults exposed to a grocery store in the united states. an avian strain of the coronavirus, oc43 causes about one third of all cases of childhood respiratory illness. it is believed the epidemic began when someone who got sick with mild respiratory illness went to visit his grandparents and likely spread the virus. by march, there were nearly 100,000 cases of the coronavirus in the united states. in may, about 5% of the school-aged children in new york city were infected with oc43 and it was later shown that oc43 accounted for about half of all cases of pneumonia in philadelphia and chicago. it was found in about 20% of throat swabs of the healthy adults taken in outbreak locations and a similar portion of healthy adults from households in which sick children lived. in november, another coronavirus, termed sars-cov, was discovered. sars-cov also caused severe respiratory disease in humans and is a leading candidate for the causative agent in the outbreak in china. subsequent research has shown that sars-cov is likely an animal virus, while oc43 seems to be a human virus.

the thimble mountain fire lookout tower is a popular destination among hikers, and there are several trails that begin near the tower. the longest is the well-maintained lost creek trail, which is 6.7 miles one way. the start of the trail can be found by veering right on the dirt road from the parking lot, and follow it down to the bighorn creek trailhead. the bighorn creek trail leads to lost creek trail near the lookout. the main trail up thimble mountain is the 3.1-mile cleo lake trail. this trail can also be accessed from the parking lot, or from the cleo lake trailhead, which can be found at the end of the cleo lake road. the cleo lake trail connects to the bighorn creek trail, which eventually connects to the lost creek trail.

according to a 1939 united states forest service study, during the 20th century, the usfs marked all technical maps prior to the year 1911 to indicate the location of all historic fire lookouts in national forests. all lookouts were required to maintain a fire lookout crew with two men stationed on the fire tower. the usfs also classified every lookout tower building, lookout tower, or radio lookout station with a building.
the mather point lookout tower is the tallest structure on the south rim, at 11,599 ft. the lookout is open from 7 a.m. to 10:30 p. from june through august and from 8 a. to 10 p. from september through may. it is staffed 24 hours a day from may through september, with a volunteer resident watchman on watch from may through august.
nearby it’s worth a stop at rainbow point and at the lone rock-tower ruins. if you are visiting on memorial day, take a trip to the morning glory trail and view the grand canyon’s memorial that overlooks the hualapai lands.
the south rim is a popular destination for hikers, photographers, and birdwatchers, thanks to its spectacular scenery, numerous trails, and historic buildings. in addition to the rim itself, the area also has several marked overlooks and trailheads that can be used for backcountry hikes and exploring the world below. one of the most popular day hikes is the kaibab trail, which leads to kaibab lodge, the desert view watchtower, the village of bright angel (a railroad town) and the campground at sunrise point. you can also plan day hikes to any of the nearby overlooks.
