Have you ever had a friend who, for the first few weeks they’re in school, is constantly being picked on? Auggie is the kind of kid that, if you didn’t know that he had a condition like Down syndrome, you’d think he was just kind of different. But it turns out that Auggie Pullman was born with a rare and special face.

“I could see something special in this kid,” says actor Jacob Tremblay, who plays Auggie in the new movie Wonder, which opens nationwide on December 1. “Auggie is a force of nature.”

While other kids are worried about getting clothes that fit, Auggie simply wonders whether his needs will be accommodated at school. “Auggie has a lot of compassion in him. He has a good feeling for other people. And that makes people feel more comfortable with him.”

When the film opens on December 1, audiences will not only see Auggie in all his glory, they’ll also get a glimpse of the place where his problems began—home. In the 2012 book, Wonder, author R.J. Palacio wrote about life at home for her son with Down syndrome. While some parents might be comfortable sharing those stories, others might feel too vulnerable. Wonder, however, is a movie about what it’s like to grow up and live with a difference. It follows Auggie, played by the young actor Tremblay, and his first year of high school. As the boy navigates boys who tease him about his looks and a girl who won’t look at him, Tremblay says that seeing the movie will help him feel less alone.

In an interview with POPSUGAR, Tremblay provides a little bit more insight about being Auggie.

“I do think that the most important thing we are learning from Auggie is acceptance. Most people think there’s a choice about who you are. They think it’s a matter of making the right decisions about what you will be and what you will not be. And I think that Auggie shows you that you don’t choose who you are. You can’t choose who you are. You get born into it.”

Tremblay also reveals that when he first started auditioning, he felt a lot like Auggie did. “I thought I was talented and everything was going to be fine and suddenly I found myself being rejected for my talent and for my ability.
