In their latest bid to end the outdated laws, a group of actors has written an open letter in Hollywood trade magazine Variety, asking the entertainment industry to rid itself of the outdated legal provisions that ban gay actors from playing straight roles.

The letter, which Variety reporter Chris Evangelista described as “one of the most sweeping in recent memory” was written by eight gay, bisexual, transgender and straight actors — most prominently, names you’ve heard from before, like Kristen Bell, Rosie Perez, Zoe Kazan and Evan Rachel Wood.

The signatories write: “The laws that ban the work we’re discussing don’t only affect gay and trans people — they limit every actor and every filmmaker, regardless of gender and sexual identity, to a limited set of roles. And they should be changed.”

In the past, LGBT activists have been generally supportive of legislation that seeks to end so-called “homosexuality clauses” in entertainment contracts.
