Repainting a JPanel multiple times?

I’m having an issue that I think should be easy to resolve. I’m building a simple application, so I’ve got a main frame, and when the user clicks a button, I want to repaint the main frame. My problem is that if I do this, the main frame disappears, and I can’t figure out why. I tried using a separate JFrame, and instead of using frame.repaint(), I used frame.revalidate(). This solves the problem.
Does anyone know why this is happening? The only reason I can think of for it happening is that my custom paintComponent is resetting itself after each click. Is that really possible? How do I prevent this? The code looks like this:
