If you love this game, then supporting developers through in-app purchases shouldn’t be a problem for you. If you don’t want to pay, you can also publicly call out the game’s developers as enemies of creativity and carry out the Punisher-esque fictional character you’ve created and use it to kill them off. So far, there are only three devs making games which don’t carry advertising on their websites and have mentioned Steam Direct in their comments. The “Support Creative Industry!!” group is covering for six devs so far, one of whom is George Fan, who you can find in the Game Preferences: tab. Wouldn’t it be nice if they shut that down and joined the growing number of indie developers adopting In App Purchases in the future? Eventually, it’s going to become as common as hit points or high scores.
The power of the Steam Community is amazing. I have come across so many fans who openly support developers who are part of projects that they like. They may have had bad experiences with original developers, or may have just never bought their games or never heard of them before. All the important information to offer feedback and to donate, however small, is available in-game. In other words, it means true open air, literally, support for gamelab, which is infinitely better than something like Kickstarter.
I am not against in-app purchases, nor consumers buying them, but I worry about a world where they are the oxygen which fuels gamers to want to spend a few extra $$$ on a game. This cycle is insatiable, and although the mainstream media doesn’t want to talk about it, I worry that, as the noise increases and people find themselves trapped in a downward spiral spiral of “ah, I have to buy that train set to support the devs!” as the EULA warns them to, in the future malicious hackers will find ways to double, triple or quadruple your purchase to artificially inflate the sales of a game, ruining indie games development forever!
