History
1980s: Beginnings
Before the founding of Autodesk, the first person to design a CAD application was Ray Ozzie, who developed the computer program Ray Ozzie Graphics (ROG) while he was an engineering student at the University of Illinois. The computer programs he developed were distributed to several friends for review, and one of them, Richard Sammartino, forwarded them to his employer, the first software company to be based in the State of Illinois, American Management Systems. In the summer of 1980, Richard approached Ozzie to see if he would be interested in joining AMS to work on their newly formed software group. Ozzie agreed, and in September 1980 he joined AMS in Arlington Heights, Illinois.
Meanwhile, at General Electric, Keith Evans and Gary Greif were developing a similar program as part of a joint effort between the Buros Institute and G.E. Software that would eventually become CAD-PLUS. As a result of the work in the program, they were contacted by AMS’s president, Bill Leach, in January 1981, to see if they were interested in joining AMS. Both men agreed to move to Arlington Heights, Illinois to work on CAD-PLUS. By the fall of 1981, CAD-PLUS had become a well-received CAD application and was published as CAD-PLUS 1.0 in November 1981.
Due to Bill Leach’s insistence, both Evans and Greif began working for AMS as consultants. The program was renamed Autocad to emphasize its ability to automate the design process and allow for the creation of “do-it-yourself” parts. AutoCAD 1.0 was released in December 1982, and the program was an immediate success.
In 1984, Autocad became a member of the Association for Computing Machinery. In 1985, a new version of AutoCAD was introduced, AutoCAD 2.0
