The news comes days after plans to build new nuclear power plants by Hitachi and Toshiba fell apart after a cost dispute between the companies and the government.
Prime Minister Theresa May has said that the UK is “vital” to meeting carbon targets.
According to the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the government wants to cut emissions by 80 percent by 2050. It is currently on track to meet half of this goal by 2020, with the remainder achieved by the mid-2030s.
Environmental groups have urged the government to take a more ambitious stance, arguing that it is a positive step to stick with a nuclear energy plan.
“Yet again, Theresa May has shown herself to be the only person in the country that doesn’t believe in global warming,” said Giles Keating, director of Friends of the Earth, in a statement. “The Prime Minister’s latest pledge to double the life of our nuclear plants is an appalling missed opportunity to cut our reliance on fossil fuels and tackle the climate crisis.”
But the group said that the extension of the plants’ licenses is not enough and called on the government to commit to stopping the construction of new plants for the next 25 years.
