The 30 Fathom threshold, which is still used today, is a routine test diving depth for naval divers to achieve. To understand what this means, consider that at 30 fathoms (300 metres), you would have to stop breathing and hold your breath for thirty seconds. This means that the maximum diving depth at which divers can make reasonable progress is 300 metres. After that the limits of human capability are tested beyond a point where we are capable of continuous breathing, and divers must make their way back to the surface and rest. In the military this test is known as the 30 fathom rule, because, by its nature, it enables the personnel to be able to perform their training anywhere along the coast. The rule, like a lot of rules in the military, are there not to be applied, but only to be observed. Despite its apparent usefulness, there is no evidence that it is needed nor has any value in application.
To meet standard diving depth, each diver must undertake a static anatomical and underwater tests, together with a hydrophobic suit, which will enable the diver to stay out of the water and continue breathing at 30 metres for 30 seconds. This is known as the Breathing Hold dive test. These tests are known as’static’ tests because they do not involve the diver or training assemblies. They are, for the most part, methodical and can be completed in dives of 15 minutes or less (BAE, 2005).
Day three is an action orientated “work in the job” element where candidates are required to complete the majority of the practical diving tests, and some classroom work. The practical element consists of a face-to-face underwater test to prove fitness for military diver training. This will be carried out using the diving station found at HMS Troy (A). Candidates will dive under the supervision of two instructors using an underwater bicycle (the only diving machine used during the remainder of the course). The test will involve a full stress dive.
