i always thought that the fact that casino royale was one of the first roger moore-driven bond movies, and the first of the rebooted series that i’d actually sat down and watched the first time, was more than enough to justify the fact that i absolutely had to finish this hardback collection of ian fleming’s novels, at some point. i read almost all of them, but i had to start with casino royale (and goldfinger, and thunderball, and you only live twice). then the logic was there, and the casino royale novel being the first of the fleming books i’d read, it was enough to make that first reading a real slog. i wouldn’t mind reading a few more of the fleming novels now, but i just can’t bring myself to read them (i put the rest of the novels off the list of titles i’ll read, and now i’m stuck with the rest of my backlog).
i’m still trying to figure out what it was about casino royale that got me to read it at some point. mostly i suspect it was the casino royale movie, of course, and that the book was read for me because it was used as the inspiration for the movie, as well as being the first bond novel i read. the first time i listened to it, however, i found it pretty well-done–which is a pretty rare thing to say about a fleming novel, especially since i had just found a lot of the other fleming novels to be pretty miserable. but casino royale struck a balance between james bond quirkiness and fleming’s own hardboiled style that i found pretty entertaining, actually. i put it in my top 10 so i could listen to it again, and spent too much time getting lost in the story, character, and fleming’s unique ability to wrap his plots around little fascinations like “did you know that blagh from the brazilian air forces had gone in for a career change? he’s an operatic tenor!” really? good lord. but he does it and it’s interesting and it pays off. i’m a sucker for it, as i think fleming knew he was.
