Dzierzoniowo

Dzierzoniowo () is a town in central Poland with 4,989 inhabitants (2004). It is the capital of Dzierzoniowo County, within Greater Poland Voivodeship.

History
The settlement is situated in the ancient seigniory of Przemysl which was then part of Masovia. The oldest surviving mention of the town dates back to 1316. Its name derives from Dziędziòw, a demonym of the Germanic inhabitants of the region.

Dzierzoniowo was pillaged by the Swedish army during the Battle of Dzierżoniów in the mid-18th century. It was the site of the fire of 1835 and the subsequent murder of the town’s ruling class, which stemmed from the economic situation at that time. The town was incorporated into the Kingdom of Prussia in 1773 and renamed Dziębniowo. In 1878, it passed to the Duchy of Warsaw as a part of the Masovia Governorate. It was annexed by the German Empire in March 1916.

During World War II, the town served as the headquarters of the General Staff of the Luftwaffe. Following the war, the town became part of the Poznań Voivodeship. On August 1, 1975, it was given town rights, becoming a town again. At present, the town’s coat of arms displays the swastika.
