the muqaddimah is often translated as introduction or prolegomenon, is the most important islamic history of the premodern world. written by the great fourteenth-century arab scholar ibn khaldun (d. 1406), this monumental work established the foundations of several fields of knowledge, including the philosophy of history, sociology, ethnography, and economics. the first complete english translation, by the eminent islamicist and interpreter of arabic literature franz rosenthal, was published in three volumes in 1958 as part of the bollingen series and received immediate acclaim in the united states and abroad. a one-volume abridged version of rosenthals masterful translation first appeared in 1969.

The operational device, the instrument, the fact of historical explanation is function of Ibn Khaldun’s historical science, which has three divisions: 1-Documentation, 2-Constructivism, and 3-Theoretical explanation. The first of this explanation in social sciences is function of post-religious history such as political, juridical, economic and social, which explain events in society by natural or artificial general causes. He introduced two main historiographic laws, which are: 1. Al-Hasa and al-Cush (coming from the south and the East), named in his book history of the rise and fall of dynasties. This law states that those peoples who are very angry with God and ungrateful to Him are dynastic. 2. Al-Hijaz (coming from the West), named in the same book. This law states that the regions of the world in which a people remain permanently religious and faithful to God is the region from which the rise and fall of dynasties would spread in the world.
According to Ibn Khaldun, the civilization is in two phases: equilibrium and development. In equilibrium phase, situation is as it was in ancient time and there is constant war, evil and corruption of all kinds. In development phase, situation is as it will be in future and there is constant peace, justice and purity of all kinds. 37, the history of the decline of society and equilibrium, and the growth of society and development, are the two histories of human societies according to the author.
According to these two histories, Ibn Khaldun claimed that modern state is the degeneration of family or tribe, and called for the revival of family or tribe. 38 But if these two claims are true, then Ibn Khaldun has rejected the idea of modernity, in which progress is regarded to be the highest kind of achievement. Modernity holds the belief that society progresses with constant progress of its technology, and progress of its science, and as this belief is very much used, 39 modernity is sure to lead to prosperity and progress, and Ibn Khaldun’s ideas are different.
