While the film was then still in its preregistration phase, Anurag Kashyap decided to make a video blog with Irrfan Khan and Guneet Monga to express the feelings of the cast and crew members that witnessed the end of an era of Indian cinema. The video blog, called We Are Devshah, (conceived as a Facebook album for the film) highlights Kashyap’s frustration with the decision. Kashyap said he feels sad because the world is ending, while the reactions from Khan and Monga are that their world started to open in November 2012. In the video, Khan and Monga, along with Arun Rangachari and Nakul Vaid, talk about the ups and downs of the film, and reminisce about how advertising came into their lives (for instance, there is one humorous scene where the three men reminisce about the time when Arun Rangachari bought a new T-shirt with cute symbols of what it means to be a dabbawala. The T-shirt is still in Nakul Vaid’s office, ironically showing how the life of a dabbawala in Mumbai goes on without him). They also talk about the “signature track”, “Rangbange” by Pitam Ranade, which they hope will be their take on Adele’s “Skyfall”. Nassar Ali Khan agreed to arrange the music of “Rangbange”, and composed the song.[48]
The film announced its release date in January 2014. Guneet Monga set out to augment the film’s marketing campaign by organising short films involving the Indian dabbawala system (which he felt was under-represented in films), interviewing people from Mumbai’s dabbawala system, and holding a release party of more than a hundred people.[49] The pre-release buzz surrounding Kashyap’s directorial debut, The Lunchbox, and his unconventional marketing strategies garnered the film significant publicity.[50]
The film was released in India on 30 March 2014.[51] It opened in limited screens in Pakistan, the United States, the UK, the Arab world, and multiple countries in Europe, grossing 25.45 million, 14.83 million, 9.4 million, 7.3 million, and 6.3 million respectively in its first 5 weeks of release.[52] In its last week of release, the film grossed 5.
