you can call up the properties panel from any of the panel groups by clicking the properties button on the right side of the panel header. then make a change, and the properties panel displays the current value of the setting. if you want to change how a setting appears on a page, you can edit the page style sheet. (see the next section for information about the styles that are applied to your pages.)

if youre creating a page in the new site youd like to use as a starting point for a new site, choose the new site button in the sitemap panel. dreamweaver then displays a page with a navigation panes that represents the pages of the new site, along with a few sample pages. you can click any of the existing site pages to insert them into the new site. (youll find out more about those pages later.

at the top of the code view, a black bar called the horizontal ruler is where you enter the text for your page. the document window, and the design view window to the right, display whatever is under the horizontal ruler (see figure1-2). there are three main areas on the horizontal ruler:

dreamweaver makes the process of adding a web page to a site relatively painless, even if it takes a little time the first time through. however, there are a few things that you can do to refine the experience. for example, dreamweaver lets you choose the page size (from letter to tabloid) you want your pages to be. but it doesnt let you go up to a size thats bigger than letter without adding a second page. there are other page settings as well, like a text wrap setting that lets you have margins on all four sides of your page. dreamweaver sets the margin sizes automatically, and if you want to, you can make one side larger than the others.
first, any css properties with the !important keyword are usually best left alone. the !important keyword makes a given property apply no matter what. if you change it, the property doesnt apply until you change it back. for example, the rule:
color:white!important; makes a paragraph color white. but once you change that color, the rule takes precedence, and the paragraph turns white no matter what. the rule is useful when you want to make sure that a !important property overrides any existing property with the same name. but its best to only use it when you really need to, and if you can live without it, youll be less likely to accidentally add the !important property to a new rule.
css 2.1, which is the newest css standard, isnt supported by the latest version of dreamweaver. if you want to add css effects like backgrounds and gradients to your pages, dreamweaver can do the job, but the effects dont look as good as they do in firefox or internet explorer.
