When I started working on my game VVVVVV, it was a struggle to find the right balance between freedom and level design. I played lots of procedurally-generated games, from Dear Esther to The Long Dark, and from Dwarf Fortress to System Shock 2. I was eager to make a game that let you explore dungeons at your leisure but also play tight and guided dungeons. The problem was that the genre that I wanted to create didn’t exist at that time. Sure, this problem exists today, but it seems to me that very few companies have made games that support the concepts of experience design, experience guiding, and dynamic environments. In those cases where they exist, they tend to be more focused on the experience aspect, and I’m afraid that I didn’t pay much attention to the guiding when I was trying to design a certain level design.
But recently, I started working on a game I like even more: VVVVV, and I wanted to leave all my worries about level design behind, so I decided to create a new engine, one that could guide the player without constraining his movement. To evaluate such a level design, I decided to change the entire environment with every new episode of level design. The more levels that I’ve designed, the more I’ve noticed the direct relationship between level design and environment design.

What I am trying to do is have two circles collide and disappear when they overlap. After doing a bit of research, I found a Pygame example of collision detection.
