The graphics of the first hand-drawn Grim Fandango game have been dramatically enhanced with the inclusion of shiny new lighting techniques. The actors playing the characters have been re-scanned for better facial expressions and movements and the artists have gone back to the original recordings to better flesh out the soundscape. The result is a more realistic game, with better animations and toned-down character models.

The back-story of Grim Fandango has been uncovered along with new missions, conversations and items which set this in the wider LucasArts universe. As you play the game, you’ll be able to take on the various challenges and missions set by the owner of the “Grim” enterprise. It’s a world-set in the middle of the 23rd century and the only place on earth where time works differently. The inhabitants live in a never-ending ‘Day of the Dead’, as the events of the game are set to occur the next time the festival is celebrated.

The challenge is to stay alive, avoid bloodthirsty enemies and solve a variety of puzzles. You can get ‘help’ from characters like Burke, whose appearance denotes his role. For example, he’s a prisoner who will remain a prisoner; the electrician is a helpful but ultimately destructive part of a video game machine; and the museum ‘character’ who hands you the Grim ‘Dag’. The major boss fights are all one-on-one encounters and each character has a special ability which makes them more difficult. The range of puzzles varies, with some relying on timed responses, while others require you to headbutt the correct character. Grim Fandango’s puzzles are designed to serve the story, rather than to limit the player’s choices.

There’s a lot to like about Grim Fandango–it combines the lighthearted fun of Sam & Max with an emphasis on hand-drawn art and a terrific story. But it’s also an unforgiving adventure. Death is a serious business, and nobody, and especially not Manny, is allowed to be too long in the Land of the Dead. Since the player character has no hitpoints, each death costs a finite amount of “heart,” and both health and heart deplete rapidly in the face of a relentless set of enemies.
All seems well and good, but wait: when Manny’s story is over, his adventures keep coming. With each new client he meets, the previously inaccessible parts of the game open up, giving the player an enjoyable over-the-shoulder look at the dead-worlds they inhabit as they journey deeper into Grim Fandangos rich story. A second and third playable character are introduced, along with new locations and puzzles. Finally, at the game s conclusion, the player is free to play the game for the first time, as if it were a new adventure. In a sense, it is: all of the original games career is documented, making possible a “first play” experience reminiscent of classic playtime with old-time video games.
