abstract: the primary goal of this study was to determine the prevalence of hypertension (htn) and its associated factors among jimma town resident. the study was conducted in jimma town from september 1 to november 29, 2016, using a population-based, cross-sectional design. a total of 679 (339 males and 340 females) adult urban residents participated in the study using systematic random sampling. data were collected on socio-demographic and clinical variables using structured questionnaire and blood pressure was measured using a standard mercury sphygmomanometer. blood pressure was elevated among 198 participants (29.38%), 107 (34.0%) for systolic and 96 (30.2%) for diastolic blood pressure (dbp). the prevalence of htn was 20.66% (127/ 679). blood pressure increases as the age increases (p<0.05), with hypertension more common among elderly participants (odds ratio [or]: 2.15; 95% confidence interval [ci]: 1.34-3.45). in addition, participants with htn were less likely to be literate than those with normal blood pressure (or: 1.75; 95% ci: 1.08-2.85). a family history of htn (or: 0.58; 95% ci: 0.36-0.92) and low income (or: 0.38; 95% ci: 0.23-0.63) were less likely to have htn.

This study aimed to explore the information gaps in the knowledge about Gambella National Park (GNP), Ethiopia. Information was obtained from recent workers about GNP. The obtained information was then used to identify the information gaps in the management of GNP. The gaps in knowledge about GNP were evaluated by using the UNESCO-IUCN guidelines. By using purposive sampling, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, observations, and direct questioning during a focus group discussion. Interviews and focus groups were conducted from April to May, 2012. Information from the interviews and focus group discussions was analyzed thematically. The main information gaps identified in this study were related to the lack of a geographical information system to enable the management of GNP. Furthermore, there was lack of awareness about GNP in the people living in the Gambella region, which resulted in a low level of participation of the local communities. To effectively conserve GNP, it is necessary to improve the participatory capacity of the local communities, to improve GNP awareness, to develop a GNP Management Plan, and to encourage scientists to work in GNP. Although GNP was a protected area in the early 1990s, the National Park Administration has failed to make any appreciable improvement in the park’s administration. However, the park is generally considered safe to visit. GNP also provides good opportunities for academic and scientific researchers. PMID:26859209
This study aimed to assess farmers�knowledge and perception towards domestic medicinal plants and associated health problems in the Arsi zone, northern Ethiopia. A qualitative and quantitative, cross-sectional, community-based study was conducted in selected kebeles of Arsi zone. A total of 88 key informants were interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed descriptively. A total of 32 medicinal plants were reported by the respondents for the treatment of diseases. The higher number of plants used for malaria was distributed in Arsi and Kafa zones (11 plants), followed by Tigray (10 plants) and Hararghe (9 plants) zones. The family Myrtaceae contributed the most to the overall incidence of diseases (45.83%), followed by Asteraceae (33.82%) and Euphorbiaceae (16.67%). A total of 29 (32.95%) plants were used for the treatment of malaria. Overall, 18 (64.29%) plants used for malaria had some evidence of scientific validation. The majority of medicinal plants (31 plants) were used for external wounds and cuts. Herbs contributed to the majority of plant species followed by shrubs (9 plants) and trees (3 plants). Over 90% of the respondents in the kebeles mentioned that the sources of medicinal plants were forests and bushes in the study area. A wide range of diseases were mentioned by the respondents, the majority of which are linked to forest conservation and the sustainable utilization of medicinal plants.
