A representative part of the central nervous system called the central pattern generator, or CPG, and its control of rhythmic movements, have been studied for decades. Despite a large body of work, the knowledge on CPGs is still rudimentary. The synaptic properties of the CPGs have been explored by the concurrent recording of single neurons’ activity and muscle activity. Yet, little is known about the mechanism of coupling between the rhythm-generating neurons and the effector motoneurons. Moreover, it is often impossible to distinguish between the rhythm-generating neurons and the spinal interneurons, thus rendering their role in the generation of locomotor movements undetermined. In this review, we compare recent work on mammalian and avian CPGs to highlight limitations and common mechanisms of locomotor systems. Additionally, we discuss how neural circuit analyses can be used to advance knowledge on CPGs.In a unique attempt to strike a positive note in the U.S. and China, the Olympics and the Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States agreed Tuesday to cooperate on a project to help bring down the price of liquefied natural gas (LNG).
