Triangulation of a manifold

I’m reading an article about lattices and tiling honeycombs. The article says that $\mathbb{E}^3$ can be tiled with non-overlapping congruent triangles so that $V_0 = \frac{1}{6}(\mathbb{E}^3)$ has volume $1$.
It doesn’t explain how this is done.
I have an interpretation, but I’m not sure if it is correct or not. Let’s say we have a hexagon. If we glue a triangle to all six vertices, and then we glue four more triangles, we get a tetrahedron, which has volume $\frac{1}{3}$. Now we take an equilateral triangle and glue it to a hexagon, so we have a pyramid, which has volume $\frac{1}{2}$. So if we have $6$ pyramids, we get $1$.
But this interpretation doesn’t seem right, as the pyramid also has three pyramids on its base.

A good way to think about it is to consider the simplices that are contained in a rhombic dodecahedron (a rhombic dodecahedron is one in which the faces are rhombi, and the two equal sized rhombi are opposite each other.)
A rhombic dodecahedron of volume $1$ is made by gluing together three copies of the tetrahedron to the facets of the rhombic dodecahedron. There are six such tetrahedra, hence the tiling has volume $6$.
Each of these six simplices has six pyramids coming from it, hence we get $6$ pyramids in the tiling.
