sonitex stx-1260 is a universal plugin. it can be used to process any audio input device to any digital audio output. it comes with a complete set of user-friendly controls and four different real-time processing modes to best fit your audio needs. it also has eight included presets for instant-use.

you can load and save presets from the plugin’s preferences and the plugin’s parameter ensemble window. you can easily copy settings between sonitex stx 1260 and other sonitex plugins to save on memory consumption. the plugin also comes with a collection of presets to quickly get started with any of its six processing stages.

sonitex is a plugin that emulates vintage gear. you can therefore expect the vintage & character of the emulation to be extremely realistic and authentic. however, there are some very subtle differences that allow sonitex to best suit its intended purpose. most of these differences are hidden and are only visible under close inspection. the plugin does not aim to be an exact replica of any particular vintage hardware unit, but instead takes its cues from the overall sonic style and character of the particular hardware unit.

sonitex includes processing to mimic the mixing stage, overall distortion, vinyl pressing & playback, vinyl noise, other types of noises, frequency fidelity and finally the resolution & characteristics in digital sampling.

stx-1260 can be used to create whatever sounds you want. it can be used as a digital reverb, tape saturation, or distortion tool, but most interestingly, it can be used as a direct emulation of any of the original analog devices included in the plugin. i am pretty sure that sonitex has created the closest representation of these devices that you will find in a virtual toolbox. you can even choose between their different grades of analog emulation (from warm to cold), which in some cases may result in a noticeable improvement of the sound. just be careful, some of the original analog devices have a strong presence of noise, so if you find yourself in need of a bit more noise in your mix, try to avoid using these devices.

Sonitex launched in December 2014, and after reading up on Sonitex on Audiofanzine, I was instantly impressed with the unique stylistic approach they were taking with their plugins. So I downloaded their free preview version, and to my surprise, it did not disappoint at all. Looking at the website, it actually reminded me a lot of the free Presets for Ableton & Massive that are built into these vintage sounding plugins.
You can tell right away that Sonitex isn’t for everyone, as there is nothing mainstream sounding about the approach they took. It’s meant to be a plugin to experiment with and that’s exactly what I did. In this review I’d like to briefly highlight the features of the plugin and then dive into the presets, which feature 90 + presets, created by the same team who brought us Tone Nk V1 and now Sonitex Compac AG-K13 – a plugin for all your sound designing and production needs!
Let’s start by taking a look at the user-friendly interface of Sonitex Compac AG-K13. As already indicated, it is by no means the most feature packed plugin out there but for me it has all the most important functions covered. It has 6 input channels with a combination of 6 internal effects (EQs, compressors, de-essers, reverbs, and modulators) each with their own dedicated section for control.
The effects that work best in Sonitex are its six Stereo Expander/Stereo Expander II, three Stereo Compressor, and the Noise Gate. These are all easy to use and reproduce a wide range of different timbre from very low/bassy sounds to very high/punchy sounds. Because the effect chains of each stage can be individually gated, the Stereo Expander and Stereo Compressor can be used either in their default state (gated) or bypassed (unchanged) to give you more creative freedom when fiddling with the sound. The Stereo Expanders can be made mono or stereo, and you can select from 4, 8, 16, or 32 bands of equalization. The Stereo Compressor offers a low threshold and a high threshold, allowing for subtle tonal changes, as well as an expander mode that adds gain for low frequencies and a stereo compressor mode that adds gain for high frequencies.
