it really is amazing. my first session was about the testing, and then we moved to the security and then we moved on to business analytics.the business analytics is the next step for vrops. we’re just looking at what our clients can do with analytics, and the great thing about it is that it’s not just the data. it’s not just analysis. it’s an actual strategy of the client to deal with the data.

when vmotion or xmotion is triggered by a vm, vmotion makes a copy of the vm’s state to a special host-level file. this file is called the clone file. the part that is moving is called the template. the part that is receiving is called the target. as long as the clone file is complete, vmotion is allowed to move the vm from the template to the target. when that happens, vmotion copies the clone file from the template host to the target. this allows the vm to receive the same state as the original. if something changes during the transfer, the clone file on the target host is always up-to-date.
after vmotion the complete file (or network chunk) is copied to the target. during this copying the file is encrypted to protect the copy from the cloning host. but, the file on the target host is decrypted to allow the vmotion process to complete. now here is the catch.
the network chunk is not the file that is actually transferred over the network. the network chunk is the data that holds the specific information about the file to be transferred. this is used so that the file can be sent over the network in any transfer, even from large chunks over a long period of time.
what is meant by this is, when the vmotion process is triggered and each vm on the source host is vmotioned to another host, all vms on the source host are encrypted. the network chunk that is copied is encrypted. the file that is copied will then be decrypted on the target host and the decrypted copy will be the actual copy of the file that is to be transferred.
during the decryption of the copy file, the source file’s original permissions and ownership are maintained. this is done so that the decrypted copy will be the original and be maintained. if anyone tries to change the permissions or ownership of the target file, the vmotion operation will fail and the process will have to be restarted. also, all virtual machines that were vmotioned must be rebooted when they are moved to the target host or they will be unable to use the copied vms on the target host.
