Sad news for all of us. Today, I lost my lifelong best friend, Micah, my son, to a terminal brain tumor. I find that keeping his memory alive is somewhat of a cause I am passionate about. This blog was created to keep his memory alive, and to help other families dealing with autism on a daily basis.
This is Micah’s picture taken just a couple days before he passed away.
I’ve seen the effects of autism firsthand. I’ve seen the joy it brings my son, Daniel and I’ve seen the challenges it brings in the rest of our family. I’ve watched those closest to me work through his problems in a way I will never be able to imitate.
I’ve known for a long time that Micah suffers from bipolar disorder, and that he was in a lot of pain. The last few years since we found out about his diagnosis, we have had him in counseling weekly. I’ve been able to stand by him, and let my own insecurities and the horrors of cancer overshadow how much I loved him.
I was able to say that, in my own mind, we were making progress. We hadn’t been to court for a while. I was coping (relatively) well. Micah was doing ok.
Then, we learned that his brain tumors were metastatic.
“Metastatic” is cancer that has spread through the body. Almost everyone who reads this knows the definition of the word “metastatic”. A part of Micah’s brain had started to spread, and it wasn’t going to get better. We had weeks, maybe months. I was shocked. I knew that death might be coming for him, but I never imagined we would have to actually DO it.
I hate having to make that decision.
I know that Micah wanted to die. I knew it as soon as I learned of his diagnosis, and I trusted that he did so because he didn’t want to live in pain. I know that Micah wanted to die. It terrified me that my son was going to leave this earth. His life was being cut short before he was even born.

Cells were grown to approximately 75% confluency and transiently cotransfected with pMir-NF-κB-luc (Promega, Madison, WI, USA) and an empty plasmid (pCMV-Sport6) or a plasmid expressing miR-590-5p (pCMV-Sport6-miR-590-5p).
