AutoCAD was originally developed by an Autodesk employee named Gary B. Hughes who, upon being laid off from the company, teamed up with two friends to form what would become AutoDesk. AutoCAD development began under the leadership of Gary Hughes. Hughes formed a team of six Autodesk employees to develop AutoCAD by writing a new graphics program called GRAPHICS. The program was designed to be a vector graphics system, but the graphics system had many shortcomings that were not addressed until Version 2 of the program.
Since its release AutoCAD has been a major competitor in the CAD world. The program has expanded to offer additional functions as well as a number of modules that developers can add to the base program. AutoCAD’s popularity has continued to increase, and AutoDesk has announced major new versions of AutoCAD. Version 12.0 (as opposed to version 11.0) was released in 2018. In 2014, AutoCAD 2016 was released, and in 2015 AutoCAD 2017 was released.
With an installed base of over 32 million licenses in its core enterprise software family, AutoCAD is the fastest-growing product line in Autodesk’s history. AutoCAD is a very widely used product among engineers, architects, designers, technicians, surveyors and many other professionals, and is included in a growing number of educational offerings.
On 20 June 2009, the AutoCAD R16 release added the ability to open 3D files created with 3ds Max and Maya.

The publisher does not plan to continue development of AutoCAD 2016. Instead, the team plans to concentrate on developing AutoCAD LT in response to user feedback.
