History
Autodesk was founded in 1980 by John Walker. Prior to founding Autodesk, Walker worked as a licensed surveyor and land developer, with a focus on data processing and analysis. Walker began his career in the land development industry by purchasing computers from surplus sources and repurposing them for his own needs. In 1982, Autodesk was founded as a result of this practice. It was the first self-made microcomputer company in the United States.
The original purpose of Autodesk was to design, develop, and sell products for the microcomputer revolution. The company was formed after Walker sold his first computer and was able to recover some of the costs of the purchase. This experience taught Walker that he could not expect to design and market a CAD system on his own. To market Autodesk’s products, Walker recruited industry luminaries to serve as advisers for the company. Autodesk’s advisory team included John McCarthy, a renowned computer scientist and pioneer of artificial intelligence; Norman Albuquerque, who had taught Walker about programming; and James Paul Gorman, an expert in knowledge engineering.
Autodesk released its first product, AutoCAD, in December 1982, as an early example of a point-and-click GUI-based computer-aided design (CAD) software application. Designed for use on an 8-bit microcomputer equipped with a graphics board, AutoCAD was the first product to be designed for personal use and released in the DOS environment.
Initially, Autodesk operated with little financial support from the industry, capitalizing only on investment from its own founder. The company struggled to find users and revenue during the early years of its existence. Autodesk began to receive support from investors, venture capitalists, and the computer industry as a whole. In the early 1990s, Autodesk became a publicly traded company, listed on the New York Stock Exchange. Since then, Autodesk has developed a broad portfolio of software products, including AutoCAD, Maya, SketchUp, Alias Wavefront, and ENOVIA. The company has also partnered with other software companies, including Bentley, Dassault Systemes, HP, MTH, Microsoft, and Siemens.

History
AutoCAD was originally based on DraftSight, a piece of software developed by Charles Wychoff and later acquired by Autodesk. DraftSight came out in 1987 and was the only predecessor to AutoCAD. It was also the first AutoCAD killer app, as it allowed a computer to generate architectural and mechanical CAD drawings. Many of the concepts in AutoCAD were taken from DraftSight and the path from DraftSight to AutoCAD was paved by Wychoff.

Structural drafting
With its “Plane tool”, AutoCAD has a feature called “Boolean Operations” that allow complex geometric “tiling” operations to be carried out with the click of a button. Structural and architecture drafting is commonly done on a desk top with either the DWG (Drawing with Graphics) or DXF format.
Educational uses
AutoCAD is used for teaching basic CAD.

With Autocad open, go to Tools/Options and select the New Database button.
In the Database setup dialog box, under Key Usage – Temporary Use, set the following options:
* File name prefix – press Enter for the default of Autocad.
* Rename – enter the name of the new database (note the.dwg file extension).
* Database file path – change this to the location you wish to save the database, as well as its name (e.g. c:\autocad\Autocad.dwg).
* Data file location – change this to the location you wish to save the data files, as well as its name (e.g. c:\autocad\Data\local.db).
* Database File size – change this to the size of the database you wish to use (note that the database file is approximately 5.5MB in size).
* Database File type – change this to the file type of the database (e.g..db).
* Database usage – change this to Temporary Use.
To activate the key, press the Edit key on the keyboard, then select the Activate button.
You now have a new database with the key for Autocad.
Make sure you create a backup copy of your data files, as you will need to replace them with the files you have just created.
