Is there a sense of general discontent with the current economical climate in technology? I’m hiring developers for an open source project I’m developing at the moment and quite a few people have submitted their resumes, but I haven’t got any applications that look remotely like they want to earn their money by writing code. It could just be that most people out there don’t understand the importance of open source, but I’m suspecting it’s more than that. I’ve often heard that open source can be a worthy alternative to freelancing, and I don’t see it myself. What are you guys telling me? Should I look for other people or just hire the developers I want for free?

to put in some time, develop some side projects, collaborate, etc. This gives
the person a chance to see where the relationship will go, and see whether
they find it a good fit. If it doesn’t work out, you can cut ties and go in
another direction. If it works, great things happen.

hard to determine if they are merely doing it for it’s own sake and some times
