Greetings!

As promised, today we’re bringing you a review of the new game from the studio that brought you the Mistborn books. It’s an action role playing game.

In preparation for this review, I’ve played the game for almost six hours on Hard Mode. I have beaten the game and am now ready to talk about it as a review. The following are my thoughts on the game as I see it. I will use spoilers liberally.

Story and Characters

When the game begins, Tarn – the main character – is running away from persecution by the Church of the Crown. He is searching for a lost philosopher-priest called Irae. Irae has a mysterious device that Tarn needs, and Irae has promised to show Tarn the power of the device. This is a typical setup for a fantasy story. The game, however, is set in a fantasy world that’s only vaguely based on any known source of material, and Tarn is a character who finds himself in a land full of various factions, kingdoms, and cultures that are only vaguely connected to each other. This may or may not work in the service of the game – it’s not a standard plot, because it’s something that sets the game apart.

I can’t quite decide if I like the story. Tarn is a character that’s sympathetic and realistic, in that you can understand his motivations and why he does the things that he does. Irae is more like an archetypal hero figure. He exudes charisma, and even though he seems like a contradiction to Tarn’s self-sacrifice, he’s effectively a mentor for Tarn in the game.

I will say, Irae did seem to be pretty good at intrigue. He tended to be sneaky, taking on a victim or accomplice without raising suspicion. He also seemed to have a talent for making important people vulnerable to persuasion. It’s hard to fault him for that, since he came from a society that was built on intrigue.

The characters themselves play a part in the game, but it’s a minor role. There’s some basic dialogue with the NPCs, but none of them feel like real people. They aren’t as integral to the plot as people like to believe that

For the sake of continuing the game as an action RPG, we focused on incorporating a quest system into the game.
As a result of the numerous requests we received from players, we added “Quest” elements throughout the game. Unlike conventional RPG games, this quest system incorporates the action of the game in an effective manner, and allows players to avoid having to think too much while performing actions.
This quest system varies based on the situations that arise in the game. In battle, you will be able to receive quests from other characters, sometimes from NPC (Non-Player Character) allies. We also added “Quest Manuals” to the game.

* Initially, quests are divided up into “Character Quests” and “Area Quests”. Although there are still lots of tasks to be done, we will gradually change the quests into “Area Quests” to encourage players to progress the story.
* We have recently added a quest system that allows you to obtain a quest from NPC allies by completing the task that they have handed over to you.
* “Quest Breakers” that you can use to enhance your combat, magic, and item capabilities.
* In addition, you will be able to receive “Area Tickets” during the game. These allow you to access areas where there are events, or to meet characters such as the hero from a character that you were following.

Character Development

We have also added “character development” to Tarnished. We added these elements that players can collect to expand their own talents, allowing them to eventually develop their own character.
1) “Talents” – Ideals and the traits that they give you
2) “Skills” – The skills that you receive from defeating enemies or performing actions.
3) “Inventory Skills” – Skills that give you a “Benefit” from using items such as potions and armor.
4) “Icons” – Collection items that increase the attributes of your characters.
5) “Innovations” – The technologies that the character can use.
6) “Ranks” – The skill that you can use to upgrade your skills.
