The Arkham series differed from other game series in that it featured a focused approach to its stories. Similar to Manhunt, there were two narratives, each one focusing on a different side of Batman. The first storyline, which focused on the Joker, featured the origin story of his relationship with Bruce Wayne, showing how he went from a harmless clown to a dangerously insane Joker. The second storyline, which focused on Scarecrow, focused on the secret hideout and research lab he operated in the Gotham City sewers. These two plots provided the only real focus to the Arkham games, as the other characters were made mostly to provide exposition, and the events of the games were mostly caused by Batman himself. An early version of the Joker’s origin featured an adversary known as the Red Hood, while a version of the Scarecrow’s ending featured the Arkham Knight being prevented from firing his final attack.

While Arkham City took place a few months prior to the events of Arkham Knight, as a result of Scarecrow’s appearance in Arkham City there was no “protocol” effect for Batman, and he was free to take down Scarecrow’s minions. However, he decided to do so by himself, calling on Robin to help fend off his opponent’s henchmen. In the final battle of the game, Batman faced the armored Arkham Knight. With no help from Robin, or his other allies, Batman fought the Arkham Knight using only the techniques he had trained for years; The Batmobile was instrumental in helping him defeat his opponents.

The events in Arkham Knight, due to the Joker’s influence back in the Arkham City era, had left Batman so broken and traumatized that at the start of the Arkham Knight, Batman nearly died due to the effects of Scarecrow’s fear toxin from Scarecrow Nightmare. Afterwards, Harley Quinn broke out of Arkham and began torturing and tormenting Batman, but they met up with the Penguin who gave Batman much-needed rest.

After Harley broke Joker out of Arkham Asylum during the events of Scarecrow Nightmare and thus began their own twisted game of mutual manipulation between them, Batman in his weakened state begins to hunt them down. He also recovered Alfred’s will and began a new adventure with Nightwing as the main driving force, after his protégé breaks ties with Batman to fight the Joker. During the events, Bruce learned more about Harley Quinn’s plan to use the Joker as a catalyst to recruit all the Penguin’s prisoners and prisoners’ thugs she captured, causing them to be infected with her strain of the Joker’s personality and become Killer Croc, The Riddler, Harley herself, The Joker, and Two-Face. Batman defeated Harley after some difficulty, and she was defeated for good. Batman told Nightwing to begin his part of the plan to stop Harley, but Batman was captured and put under the influence of Joker’s influence once more. Joker then broke out of Arkham and kidnapped Oracle. Nightwing used his cellphone to send out a message to Batman’s allies, with Batman himself being captured, that on Halloween night, the city would explode and that they were the cause. However, Oracle miraculously recovered and contacted Batman at his secret lair to help them, and was able to show his allies the location of Harley’s lair. In the final battle against her, Harley fought Batman one-on-one, but after Batman knocked her out, Joker infected her with the same strain of the Joker’s personality that Harley Quinn had used against Batman, though the effects of this were lessened due to Joker possessing her.

As Batman was investigating, the Joker once again posted a video message, this time announcing that he was releasing a new batch of bombs inside Arkham City. The videos were pre-recorded just prior to the Joker’s capture and his internment at Arkham Asylum. When the bombs go off, the entire prison is released from its hole, except for the Joker himself. As the bombs go off, the cell walls and prison walls are blasted off and the Joker is set free into a new arena. The Gotham police arrive, and the Joker starts to blast them with a rocket launcher, which is then blown apart, before the Joker goes up against them. Batman then arrives, as he sees the Joker blast away the police, and thinks that the Joker somehow tricked him, as he has escaped prison. The Joker responds, that he tricked Batman, as he did not want Batman to stop him.
Another ally was Alfred Pennyworth. He eventually transferred out from the GCPD, and became a headmaster of Wayne Enterprises, establishing a private school for students. When Gotham City was overtaken by Bane, the city was left in complete chaos, and Alfred became increasingly paranoid and cautious; he also started calling on the help of Robin and Tim to fight crime. When Batman successfully dealt with Bane, Alfred was instrumental in helping Blake and Gordon get control of Gotham, and planned to remove all of the weapons in Wayne Manor to ensure Gotham City was in no immediate danger.
With the Arkham series, the membership of the Dynamic Duo was expanded, with the addition of Catwoman in Arkham Asylum, the introduction of the Parademons in the Harley Quinn storyline in Arkham City, with Nightwing in Arkham Knight, and Deathstroke appearing in Assault on Arkham City. Despite the addition of the Outsiders, the Rogues, and other allies and foes, this did not diminish the series’ uniqueness.
